He attended the Queen’s Royal College and St. Mary’s College in Trinidad before emigrating to the UK after winning a scholarship to study Chinese at Oxford. He is the award-winning author of the novels Fireflies , The Chip-Chip Gatherers , and A Hot Country , as well as three works of nonfiction, North of South , Journey to Nowhere , and An Unfinished Journey . He died in 1985.
