Not Left Behind is the story of how Best Friends Animal Society rescued thousands of pets from the storm-ravaged, flooded streets of New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. The story is told through the images of Best Friends photographer Troy Snow and the words of five Best Friends rescuers—frontline troops representing thousands of volunteers across the country who helped save lives and reunite families. The mission of BFAS is driven by the simple philosophy that kindness to animals helps build a better world for all of us. BFAS works with humane groups all across the country to bring about a time when there are No More Homeless Pets. In addition to the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, located in UT, which is home to 1500 dogs, cats, horses, rabbits and other animals, BFAS reaches across the nation helping humane groups, individuals, and entire communities to set up shelter, foster, spay/neuter and adoption programs. For more information, go to www.bestfriends.org. From the introduction of Not Left Behind: "I just have to tell this story". That s how Best Friends photographer Troy Snow talks about his two weeks with a team of Best Friends rescuers in New Orleans area helping to save pets in the wake of Hurricane Katrina Paul Berry, operations director at BFAS and a native of New Orleans, got to the area the day after the storm hit and began the process of setting up a "temporary" rescue center at the St. Francis Animal Sanctuary in Tylertown, MS, about 100 miles north of New Orleans. As it turned out, that temporary center remained in operation for months Not Left Behind doesn t attempt to provide a complete picture of what was done to rescue the pets of New Orleans. Probably no single work can. But in its small way, the story of what these few did speaks volumes about the spirit of compassion that floated on those waters of destruction. As for the animals show on these pages, they too represent but a few of literally tens of thousands of pets affected by the catastrophe. Their expressions speak volumes telling of fear and desperation and despair, but also of hope and resilience. Author: Best Friends Animal Society.
