A Meditation on the Old and New Testament "John McDonough re-envisions scripture stories in a form that reaches readers in that prayerful, spiritual part of consciousness, the part that can only be reached by poetry, art, and music." McDonough brings beautiful and unique insights into the plights of well-loved biblical figures ranging from Abraham to Rebekah to the Prophets, then to topics of the parables to the miracles to the resurrection. Just like the heroic crown (sonnet redouble) connects lines of sonnets, so McDonough connects the stories of the Hebrew scriptures to the stories of the Christian Scriptures. What is a Heroic Crown? What is a Heroic Crown of Heroic Crowns? Is this the first Heroic Crown of Heroic Crowns in the English Language? A heroic crown (also called a sonnet redouble) is a specific type of poem. This is not only a heroic crown, but a heroic crown of heroic crowns. It is the first heroic crown of heroic crowns published in the English language (please see the introduction for more details). First, what is a heroic crown of sonnets? It is holographic writing. A sonnet itself has fourteen lines. Each line is connected in some way to every other line, especially the first and fourteenth line of each sonnet. The sonnets of a Heroic Crown are interlocked: the last line of each sonnet becomes the first line of the sonnet that immediately follows it. The fifteenth sonnet in each Crown is comprised of the first line from each of the preceding fourteen sonnets. Orchestrating a heroic crown of sonnets is extraordinary, but McDonough took on an additional exponentially more difficult challenge with this book: He created a Heroic Crown of Heroic Crowns. In other words, fourteen Heroic Crowns complete in themselves. Each is interlocked by the last line of each complete Crown becoming the first line of the complete Crown that immediately followed it. The final Crown consists of the fifteenth sonnet from each of the preceding Heroic Crowns. The Final Sonnet of the Final Crown is comprised of the first lines from each of the fourteen Heroic Crowns. Note: The Hebrew and Christian Scriptures are also called the "Old Testament" and "New Testament." This edition corrects an error in the title and some typographical errors but is essentially identical to the version titled "Sonnets on the Hebrew and Christian Scriptures."
