OUT OF THE BLUE is a poetry collaboration between Carol Prescott and Michael Foley, residents of the North Kohala district of Hawaii Island, aka “the Big Island”. Carol and Michael met at a local farmer’s market and surprised themselves, each other and every one they know by falling in love. The book includes 11 poems by Carol dedicated to Michael and 11 poems by Michael dedicated to Carol. Thoughtful, humorous and passionate, the poems are accompanied by 26 full-color photographs showing the beauty of North Kohala. Her 30-year career in academic research focused on the etiology of substance abuse, psychological disorders and cognitive decline. She is the author (with Kenneth Kendler) of Genes, Environment and Psychopathology (Guilford Press, 2005). Her academic honors include the Theodore Reich Prize from the International Society of Psychiatric Genetics and the Dobzhansky Award from the Behavior Genetics Association. She is the current President of the Hawaii Writers Guild. Carol’s credits for creative writing include two nonfiction pieces and two poems published in Latitudes, the literary journal of the Hawaii Writers Guild. She is (inordinately) proud of being selected as a winner in the 2000 Prairie Home Companion sonnet contest and having her poem Green is the Color of My True Love’s Socks read on air. He was a research writer, proofreader and copy editor for Britannica , and J.M. Dents Everyman Encyclopedia . His backstage writings are published in Sightlines , the Association of British Theatre Technicians Journal. Michael's poetry has appeared in Resurgence, KSOR Guide, Aikikai Newsletter, Methuen’s Anthology of Theatre Verse , and small press publications including Trillium, Fireweed, Crowd, and Fair Requests. His first poetry collection was Watching the Egg Dance in the Pan (1990). A chapbook, Hair of the Barista (2016) was followed by the poetry collection, One Good Ear (2020).
