A look Inside “It appeared as if the whole world was one elaborate system, opposed to justice and kindness, and set to making cruelty and pain.” “You mustn’t fool yourself with the idea that you could hire experts to attend to things; for how could you know that a man was an expert, unless you knew as much as he did? … Be your own expert, said Dad!” ― Upton Sinclair, Oil About the Book As James Arnold "Dad" Ross and his son James Jr. ("Bunny") drive through southern California on their way to meet the Watkins family, who are renting out some oil land they own, they are introduced to the reader. They learn that the family can't agree on how to run the properties or how to split the money made from them. While Dad and Bunny hunt birds on the Watkins' goat ranch, someone else finds oil. At Bunny's request, Dad tries to stop the elder Watkins from hitting his daughter Ruth by telling them that he has had a "third revelation" that says parents shouldn't hit their kids. When Eli, Ruth's brother, joins the conversation and says that he has gotten the revelation, the plan goes wrong. As drilling starts on the Watkins land, Bunny starts to understand that his dad's business practices aren't always moral. The people who work for Dad go on strike after an accident kills one and an oil well blows out, destroying the well. Bunny wants to be loyal to her dad, but he also wants to be friends with Ruth and her rebellious brother Paul, who back the workers. During World War I, Paul is forced to fight. After the war is over, he stays in Siberia to fight the growing Bolsheviks. Back home, Bunny goes to college and becomes more active with socialism with Rachel Menzies, a classmate. When Paul gets back home, he tells his family about his trips and says that he has become a communist.
