A broken leg lands Ted Bear in the hospital, and he hates it, until an encouraging nurse and visits from friends help him make the best of it PreSchool-Grade 2-- Not as simplistic as it first appears, this account of Teddy Bear's trip to the hospital after breaking his leg tells the truth about the pain, X-rays, cast, strange smells, bad food, and separation from his mother that are the upsetting part of such an experience. But once Ted has a good dessert, gets out his toys, makes friends with the other patients, and begins rolling around in a wheelchair, life improves. The cheery, relentless rhythm of the rhymed text lightens the mood of the story, and the sly ending will make children smile. The expressive pictures progress in an orderly way, with a four-line verse and a two-thirds page illustration facing full-page, framed art work in a busy, flat, cartoonlike, style, with a childish, crayony texture. In the tradition of Rey's Curious George Goes to the Hospital (Houghton, 1973), which is also both funny and reasonably realistic, Teddy's story will both entertain and prepare children for a similar experience. --Patricia Pearl, formerly at First Presbyterian School, Martinsville, VA Copyright 1991 Reed Business Information, Inc.
