Onions in Moonlight is the Tanka Society of America’s 2025 members' anthology, edited by Michelle Brock. This collection features English-language tanka, a five-line verse form, by 184 poets from throughout the United States and Canada, and around the world. These voices join to share moments from their lives, ranging from everyday experiences to the sublime, and the emotions that shape those memories. Why onions? As Brock notes, “In symbolic terms, onions can represent self-discovery, a peeling away of the outer layers to reveal a deeper identity. Just as the humble onion can represent layers of meaning, there is also much to discover in the deceptively simple five-line poems we know as tanka.”
