Do you know how to find the best move in any chess position? That is the ultimate goal of all chess players, from amateurs to top grandmasters, but so far no one has come up with definitive solution. After browsing through countless Stockfish games, with the latest versions of Stockfish real monsters, playing and choosing moves at 4000 elo strength, I have tried to formulate an algorithm for doing so. The idea is simple, involving three separate steps: 1) look with priority at forcing moves first, checks, captures, threats, potential and planned threats, but since in game play only rarely checks and captures are available, you should basically concentrate on threats, 2) assess the different available forcing moves as to their tactical soundness and positional validity, selecting those, that perform best, and 3) in case good forcing moves are lacking in the specific position, select the best move from among available quiet positional moves, with the best providing optimal strategic assets. In that way you will significantly limit your search to only the most appropriate moves in any specific position, while at the same time not missing any worthwhile candidate. The algorithm is discussed in detail in chapter 1, based on concrete examples. In chapter 2, Finding the best move in practice, 20 specific positions are researched, explaining how to proceed with the important task. And in chapter 3 there is detailed analysis of 20 games, played by Stockfish against different chess engines, with emphasis on the arcane process of seeking out the best move. Why Stockfish games, some might ask, and not just random human games, perhaps high quality encounters by chess champions? Well, the reason is simple - Stockfish is by far the best chess playing entity on earth currently, so browsing its games will show you the truth with higher likelihood compared to using human games for the task. There is no doubt humans frequently miss substantial continuations, proving to be best, due to inadequate tactical awareness, personal bias, shallow horizon etc. Stockfish, while not perfect, would rarely do that. In that way Stockfish games might very well open you to the ultimate truth. And indeed, when we look at Stockfish games, we see this engine plays chess differently, emphasising activity at all costs and whipping ferocious assaults. A concept like defence is almost banned in latest Stockfish versions, the engine instead tries to seize and hold the initiative constantly, no matter what. It can sacrifice a large number of pieces and pawns, and still prevail. Can we learn to play like Stockfish? Of course we can, if not fully, than at least come closer to emulating its awesome style. To do that, we must browse many Stockfish games, the more, the better. Chapter 3 tries to do precisely that, explain clearly how that giant engine proceeds to find optimal continuations. Position evaluations are shown after moves played, that's good for general board events orientation, enhancing your grasp of what happens, so try paying attention to such details too. Scores are indicated in centipawns, cps, with 100 centipawns the equivalent of one full pawn material. When the score is positive, that means white is in the lead, while negative scores indicate black stands better. 50 cps is half a pawn material, 150 cps pawn and a half material, 75 cps three quarters of a pawn material etc. The winning margin is somewhere around 100 cps or one full pawn lead. Of course, all variations cited are diligently verified by Stockfish, when you might be sure you will not be misguided. I hope you enjoy the read, and after you are finished, be able to select optimal continuations much more often.

How are ratings calculated?
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzes reviews to verify trustworthiness.
