This is a book about military theory learned from Napoleon. Although he did not write down his maxims of war he was studied, particularly by Carl von Clausewitz and Henri Jomini. Throughout the 19th century much progress was made in modernizing society. Progress was made with the Industrial Revolution, the Democratic Revolution and the Managerial Revolution. Progress was also made in military theory. This book combines the military theory with the above revolutions to show how progress was made through the various wars of the 19th century. As European civilization approached the 20th century there developed a lag in military theory so that when the First World War began in 1914 a quick victory could not be won. In fact, World War I was a regressive war that destroyed the European order, upset the universal peace of the previous one hundred years, and set the stage for a new hundred years of conflict.
