It’s 2030 and the Trance has changed the world. Brilliant tech entrepreneurs Elizabeth and Patrick Walsh, known simply as the Twins, and their company Mythos have invented a device that has given billions of users access to a hyperrealistic interface that profoundly enhances their real-world experience. Now the Trance has become sufficiently advanced for the Twins to fulfill their dream of bringing the fairy tales from their childhood to life by building a theme park billed as "the land where myths come true." Situated on an island off the coast of Ireland, Otherworld has become the most sought-after destination on the planet. Through the power of devices even more sophisticated than the ones available to the public, visitors transform into avatars such as knights, mages, warriors, hobgoblins and fairies and can see, hear, smell, touch and even taste augmented attractions as they explore the park's magical locales. In their travels, they might run across beneficent beings like gods and goddesses, Queen Guinevere and Sir Lancelot, and the Irish hero Finn MacCool, or villains like dragons, ghouls, and the fearsome cyclops Balor. Lucky young tourists might even catch the Leprechaun to win its treasure. One warm summer Saturday, a group of fourteen American teenagers and their three adult chaperones join the throngs visiting Otherworld to celebrate their recent graduation from an alternative middle school for gifted students. The day begins with all the fun and wonder they could wish for as they navigate entrancing digital spectacles and their adolescent melodramas… …until the park is attacked. Now separated into smaller contingents, the kids and adults must struggle to survive—or become victims of a savage plot.
