Growing up, girls were not always celebrated in most Punjabi families. A boy’s birth meant sweets and joy, but in contrast, a girl’s birth often brought silence, and sometimes tears. I noticed that difference early on, and it did not feel right. Yet, those messages still settled quietly in my subconscious mind. In 2009, when I learned I was having a girl, there was a brief pause. Why not a boy? I could blame the culture for instilling that belief in me or I could choose differently, starting in my own home. So, we celebrated our baby girl. We shared sweets. We had an ardaas for her at the gurdwara, and, we hosted a Lohri party. There were many comments and looks of surprise at that time, but I am so happy to see this happening more frequently now. I put together this book as gift to parents and the baby girls. I hope it helps as a reminder, from the very beginning, that every baby girl is wanted, valued, and worthy of celebration All proceeds from the sale of this book will be donated to Unique Home, Jalandhar (Punjab) and Canadian charities including CAMH in support of women’s mental health.
