William Ellirosse's life was cursed from the start. Born with a face which made his grandfather Erik pity him along with mismatched eyes, the boy just knew he was destined to being alone; an outcast. In his own opinion, the world would have been better off without him. Erik, loving his grandson not only despite his disfigured appearance but because of it, volunteered to take the boy under his wing and teach him everything Erik knew- everything. After Erik's disappearance in 1939, the family fled to London just before the Blitz. After finding himself mocked and scorned there, William turned his back on a majority of his Grandpere's teachings, donned a mask to put a barrier between himself and the world, and pushed on. When circumstances forced the Ellirosse family to flee to America, back to Stony Point, William became even more withdrawn. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, in 1941, William swore he would never get involved with the war, but things changed drastically when his best and only friend was drafted in 1943. Not wanting to lose Benjamin's friendship to the conflict, William enlisted and the two were sent to training in Florida before shipping overseas to England in 1944. The invasion of Northern France saw both men on their way to Rouen when their unit was captured by Germans. When he returned to his brigade after escaping German imprisonment, William was drafted by Gen. Omar Bradley for a special assignment which would test William's fortitude and find him using every bit of knowledge his Grandpere had imparted to him during his youth. Returning home from the war in 1945, William resigned himself to a life alone but God had other plans. All he ever wanted was to love and be loved for himself. Before the war, that seemed impossible. Could he have been wrong
