See how everyone needs a friend now and then in this delightful Pre-Level 1 Ready-to-Read from Theodor Seuss Geisel Award–winning author-illustrator, Jonathan Fenske. Pill Bug rolls alone. Pill Bug does not need anybody. And Pill Bug likes it that way, until he finds himself in a tight spot! Can he get out of this on his own, or does Pill Bug need a helping hand? PreS-Gr 2-Self-satisfied Pill Bug introduces himself by informing readers that he rolls alone and doesn't need anyone. A smaller, skeptical pink pill bug nearby watches and waits. When the smug blue bug collides with a rock and is upended, the little onlooker is there to help put him right. Then the independent insect needs a push on the swing, and the little pink bug obliges, as well as helping on the seesaw. On each occasion, the boastful protagonist is grateful and a bit more sheepish. In the end, he amends his introduction to, "We are Pill Bugs. We roll together. And we like it that way. Because sometimes…We all need somebody." With minimal text and bold illustrations against a white background, the author conveys the importance of teamwork and friendship with humor and simplicity. The facial expressions on the two characters speak volumes. VERDICT An excellent choice for beginning reader collections.-Barbara Auerbach, Cairo P. L., NYα(c) Copyright 2011.
