About this photograph: This panoramic photo, taken on September 1, 2022, captures a record-setting crowd at Acrisure Stadium for one of the nation’s most contentious rivalries between the Pitt Panthers and West Virginia Mountaineers. Known as the Backyard Brawl, since less than 80 miles separates these two universities, this long-standing rivalry began in 1895 and has endured for over a century. The stakes were high as these two teams had not met since 2011 when the Big East dissolved, and they moved into separate conferences. For this 105th meeting, fans were treated to a thrilling come-from-behind victory as the Pitt Panthers scored two touchdowns in the final 4 minutes to win the game 38-31. The crowd of 70,622 set a record as the largest attended sporting event to be played in Pittsburgh.
