He has devoted many years and traveled thousands of miles collecting material for his guides. Born in Pennsylvania, Hill earned his B.A. in history from the University of Minnesota. He also attended Hofstra University, where is obtained his M.S. in secondary education and a C.A.S. in educational administration. Hill s interest in the West dates back to childhood trips taken with his family. He is a member of the Lewis and Clark Trail Heritage Foundation, the Oregon-California Trails Association, the Santa Fe Trail Association, Western Writers of America and various historical associations. Hill is now retired from teaching and he and his wife live in Centereach, New York.
