Have you ever forgotten your cell phone at home, and when you made this discovery—at school or work—you broke into a cold sweat and thought, heart pounding in fright or with a sinking pit in your stomach, "No! No! No! Oh no! This is bad, bad, bad!" You probably used an inappropriate word that I can’t say in this book. "What am I gonna do…I’m toast…" but you wanted to say "I’m ..." Fill in the blank. If your daily ritual includes scrolling furiously through your text messages for knee-slappingly hilarious jokes, GIFs, memes, or AI-generated viral videos like a hungry dog digging in the dirt for a bone, this book is for you. Welcome to popular culture, more commonly known as pop culture. Some examples of pop culture are found in music, film and television, fashion, social media, literature, and art. Seven out of ten people in the world today have access to a cell phone. American culture, which drives most of pop culture, is probably one of our largest exports to the rest of the world. Impressionable children and young adults from remote areas in countries like China and Nigeria have joined Europeans and South Americans in their embrace of the social media craze for content from their American counterparts on Facebook, YouTube, TikTok, and numerous other websites that have created thousands of social media influencers. They, in turn, have mass-produced and generated hundreds of thousands of hours of memes, jokes, pranks, and videos of American life and lifestyles, to be consumed in the form of fashion, photographs, video games, sports, music, dance, food, and drinks, to name a few. Our cell phones, which keep doubling in memory, capability, and efficiency, allow this to happen. They can also be used for dozens of tasks and functions, besides connecting us to each other and the outside world. They are now as plentiful, ubiquitous, and common as "leaves of grass." As an English major and teacher who enjoys social media for fun and relaxation as much as the next person, I also see the utility of reading jokes and memes. I value them mainly for their humor and the life lessons and moral values contained within inspirational or motivational sayings. I decided to write this book to help students become critical readers and thinkers. This book contains 75 jokes, memes, and interesting sayings to both entertain and educate. Each can be used as a mini-lesson, writing prompt, dispatch, conversation piece, or food for thought. The purpose of this book is to amuse students while discussing educational topics using: “Say, Mean, Matter,” and other literary devices and techniques and therefore prepare them for reading comprehension and English Literature classes.
