Two discourses of John Bunyan on prayer have been compiled together here in one work. The first is titled “Praying with the Spirit and with the Understanding Also” or “A Discourse Touching Prayer”. It was originally published in 1662. Bunyan had been imprisoned for, among other things, opposing the forms of prayer in the Book of Common Prayer—this you’ll see being referenced in his writing. It is no surprise then that “Praying with the Spirit” reflects the deep communion that Bunyan yearned to have with his God. The second work is titled “The Saints’ Privilege and Profit”, or what is more commonly known and published today under the title “The Throne of Grace”. It is a lengthy study of Hebrews 4:16, which calls the saints to come boldy to God’s throne of grace. This particular work was published posthumously.
