Red, White & Royal Blue meets A Darker Shade of Magic in this swoony young adult romantasy debut that’s an “entertaining blend of romance and action” ( Kirkus Reviews ) following a magical young prince and a noble seer who fall in love in the midst of war and intrigue. Shy Prince Edmund will be a great king one day: it has been Seen again and again. With rare magic giving him dominion over the nation’s plants and weather, Edmund feels a great deal of pressure to live up to the people of Saben’s many expectations, including making a perfect diplomatic alliance through marriage. That is, until he meets Lord Aubrey Ainsley. Charming, romantic, and politically insignificant, Aubrey is a Seer, but not even he could have predicted catching the eye of Edmund, the Prince of Fortune—nor that the anxious prince who talks to plants more than people could feel so right for him. Aubrey’s dream-visions have been full of battle, not love, but to say that Prince Edmund has captured his fancy would be a grand understatement. As the two become more and more intertwined, the nation of Saben falls under attack. War and dark sorcery loom on the horizon. To save their homeland, Edmund and Aubrey must resist the outside forces seeking to drive them apart and find the power within themselves to create a future for Saben—and each other—they never could have imagined. "Debut author Tirreno excels at crafting a bewitching backdrop of courtly intrigue and fictional international politics . . . Readers will root for Saben’s victory alongside Aubrey and Edmund’s sweetly unfolding romance." -- Publishers Weekly "In alternating third-person narratives, Tirreno’s debut gives romance fans the chance to revel in the love of a happy couple, while adventure-seekers will particularly enjoy the second half of the story, after Aubrey joins the army . . . An entertaining blend of romance and action." -- Kirkus Reviews Advance praise for Prince of Fortune: "Full of charm, wit, and dashing adventure, this is a compulsively readable love story about a boy, his handsome prince, and the kingdom that hangs in the balance." —C.S. Pacat, the New York Times bestselling author of Dark Rise "Gorgeously romantic. There's a warmth at the heart of this book that will wrap around you like a blanket." —Amie Kaufman, the New York Times bestselling author of The Isles of the Gods Lisa Tirreno writes fantasy and speculative fiction. A recovering journalist, she lives in Melbourne, Australia, with her family and a soap opera of chickens. She has a degree in English literature and history and is good at stabbing herself with embroidery needles. Prince of Fortune is her debut novel. Chapter 1 CHAPTER 1 If Lord Aubrey Ainsley had known when he tied his cravat that the evening he was dressing for was going to change the course of his life, he probably would have picked a more complicated knot. This is not to say that his cravat looked sloppy. His cravat had never looked sloppy in his life, and he had been even more careful than usual about his appearance tonight, since he was about to visit Talstam Palace for the first time and was just about bursting over it. But being only sixteen and the fourth son of a mere country baronet with a courtesy title, it hadn’t occurred to him that his actions might affect his country’s future. “It’ll be the prince’s turn next, I daresay,” he heard his aunt saying from the landing. They were staying in her town house for the visit. Like almost everyone in the Sabresian capital, she adored gossiping about high society. Aubrey had cracked the door of his bedchamber open in the hopes of hearing something worth listening to. “He’s the oldest unmarried royal, now that his cousin Charlotte is spoken for. I still can’t believe the king managed to persuade you to come to Elmiddan for this ball he’s hosting for the engagement, though, John. We all know how little love you have for visiting the capital. Or anywhere.” “Yes, well.” Aubrey’s father, Lord John Ainsley, pitched his voice sardonically light as usual. “His letter was too pathetic. Boo-hoo, it’s going to be so boring; everybody is going to have to be on their best behavior so as not to offend those snooty Hasprennans. I told him to just get drunk, but he said he can’t because he’s the king , and so all his friends had to come and save him.” His father was leaving out the best part, as far as Aubrey was concerned, because the king had asked after him especially. Aubrey had memorized that bit of the letter. Surely your youngest is ready to be out in society? He and Edmund should finally meet. Do make sure to bring him, old bean. The poor lad must be sick of the countryside by now. The idea that the king wanted him to meet his son and had somehow known that yes, Aubrey was indeed desperate to be out in society, was very gratifying, even if Aubrey wasn’t actually that fussed about meeting Prince Edmund. His brothers had all met him and reported that he
