A rule-breaking little princess’ magical discovery brings happiness and fun to her sad kingdom. The author imbues the king and queen’s newfound appreciation for their daughter’s courage and wisdom with genuine warmth in a thoughtful contrast to the great deal of well-calibrated silliness that comes before (such as characters named for their jobs, which include Royal Door Slammers; the Royal Squeezer, who squeezes Queen Raindrop into her shoes; PinCushion, who dresses the Queen; and the Royal Screwball, whose job is to “swivel” the King around corners). Francesca is an appealing character who readers will want to root for, especially as she navigates the disparity between society’s expectations and what she wants deep in her heart. Her feisty humor is delightful, as she regularly spouts bits of half-baked wisdom such as, “a frog who can disguise himself as a prince will still have some frog blood in him”. In this delightful and funny middle grade novel, readers will be introduced to a heroine who is unconventional, determined, sassy, and very self-confident—everything a real princess should be!
