As a child, her family moved from Chicago into the small town of Beloit, Wisconsin, where she and her siblings took advantage of the rural outdoors. The Adventures of Princess Lizzie was inspired by her daughter, but also draws from her mother's creativity and strength. Dr. Van has a doctorate in education and is a former scientist and educator. She, her husband, and daughter live in the Seattle area.
