This report looks closely at how ten North American colleges have deployed cloud computing solutions. Organizations profiled include: the Yale School of Management, Remington College, the University of Washington, the City University of New York, Westmont College, the University of Utah, Hofstra University, Abilene Christian University, St. Edward's University and Fresno Pacific University. The report helps information technology and other administrative personnel to answer questions such as: What kind of cloud computing solutions are American colleges using? How much do they spend to develop and implement them? How much do they save vis a vis their prior solutions? How do they deal with data security concerns? What has been the college experience with free services offered by Google, Microsoft and other? How have cloud computing solutions been rolled out and marketed? How good is customer support? By the summer of 2011, St. Edwards planned to do a major overhaul to its Web site to make it more attractive to potential students and more effective to current students, faculty, and staff but was concerned about the work adding more stress to its IT department. The University had started on the virtualization path three years ago by adding VMware features to its servers. As they were expanding use of those systems, they were becoming larger and more difficult to manage. “We needed to upgrade items, such as cooling systems,” notes Hockenhull. They also would need to find capital to pay for additional hardware and software. In the spring of 2011, they examined whether or not a cloud solution would work and contacted a number of local resellers. They decided to go with Rackspace because they felt its service was flexible and reliable. “Since the service was available for a set fee, it became easy to budget,” said Hockenhull. The school ran into some integration issues as it was trying to getting all of the different pieces to interoperate. After addressing those problems, the school had its new site up and ready for students coming in during the fall.
