Roy C. Long retired from the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway at Hinton, West Virginia, in September 1981 after 42 years of work, beginning as a telegraph operator, ending as chief train dispatcher. During his childhood, the family lived in close proximity to the railroad where his father was employed by the C&O as a track foreman. During these formative years he spent many a day at the old “OX” Cabin, near his home at Moss Run, Alleghany County, Virginia. There, at age twelve, he learned to telegraph and set his sights on what would be his lifelong career. At the time of his death in December 1998, he had written six hundred and forty-three weekly railroad columns for The Hinton News , entitled “Railroad Recollections.” This is a collection of some of his stories.
