Soccer phenom Charlie Connor is cruising through high school, until he gets the letter from London. Charlie makes the academy team at elite club Burnchester United – and makes fast enemies. Battered by inferior opponents and spurned by jealous teammates, he yearns for his Virginia home. But Charlie’s dad can’t hear him, not while he’s living his dream through his son. Charlie’s girlfriend and best pal are no help either. Inspired by his yoga instructor, Charlie fights on and earns promotion to Burnchester United. Maturing into a world-class talent, he envisions a career playing for Burnchester and the U.S. national team. But Charlie’s dad is pushing him down a different path, a path shaped by ego, greed, and Charlie’s dual citizenship. Will Charlie stand up to his dad, or will he get taken down? Bill Summers is a writer and soccer enthusiast. He is the author of the young adult novel, Red Card. His Max Miles Soccer Series comprises three chapter books for middle-grade boys: Clash of Cleats, Cracked Cleats, and Comeback Cleats. His Shannon Swift Soccer Series features three books for middle-grade girls: Magic Boots, Scuffed Boots, and Buffed Boots. The first book in each series has been published; the second and third books will be released soon. Summers's first book, The Soccer Starter, Your Guide to Coaching Young Players, was published by McFarland & Company in 2006. Summers began playing soccer at age six in a schoolyard in Oxford, England. A native of Ithaca, New York, he went on to play at Cornell University, where he was captain and named an alternate to the NCAA Senior Bowl. Summers continued to lace up long into his adult years, learning something new each time he crossed the chalk. As a parent, he spent a decade coaching boys' and girls' youth teams. For thirty years, Summers moonlighted as a sports reporter covering soccer, baseball, basketball, and football for The Bernardsville News in New Jersey. His soccer writing has earned awards from the Society of Professional Journalists. While his soccer boots are now untied for good, he remains tethered to the game through heart, mind, and keyboard. How are ratings calculated?
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzes reviews to verify trustworthiness.
