The author is an acknowledged military historian and experimental archaeologist. Most of his work has dealt with the Roman army and Roman gladiators, but he has also published books on the Thirty Years War, the Age of Louis XIV, the Napoleonic Wars and the Wars of the mid-nineteenth century. As a freelancer he cooperates with universities and museums in reconstruction and research projects, exhibitions and educational films. He is lecturer at the University of Munich and at the Military High School at Munich.
