In this lively memoir written with his characteristically dry Nova Scotian wit, Dr. Steele shares anecdotes from throughout his long life that literally took him from the horse-drawn wagon and sailing schooner era to jet aircraft and moon landings. Born in 1898 in a small Nova Scotian fishing village on the Bay of Fundy, where isolation and harsh winters mandated ingenuity and resourcefulness, Archie Steele describes how he and his friends survived and thrived despite losses along the way. Archie describes his education in strict denominational schools under challenging conditions, leading him eventually to medical school in California. He eventually set up a busy practice in Los Angeles where he treated everyone from indigent immigrants to businessmen and government officials to Hollywood stars. When he retired at age 91-1/2, he was the oldest practicing physician in Los Angeles county. He shares stories of interesting patients and cases that he attended to that reveal how much the practice of medicine changed during the 20th century--and how interesting people have remained! Dr. Steele never forgot his Nova Scotian roots. He built several large yachts in the backyard of his medical office, sawing, sanding and hammering between patients. He successfully raced Placebo and later Stella Maris around southern California, then built Stella Maris II which he raced to Honolulu in Transpac, finishing first in 1941. The novel designs of these and other boats are mentioned in the book, along with his many interesting sailing experiences. Ranching was another hobby that recalled the experiences of his youth, and Dr. Steele shares stories of ranching life, animals, interesting people, and unexplained night visitors to the old ranch house. Whether describing his childhood, education, medical practice, sailing or ranching, Dr. Steele's stories simultaneously inform, entertain, and inspire! The Deluxe Color Edition of this book has a mix of historical B&W and color images. The Standard Edition has the same images but only in black and white, which substantially reduces publishing costs and thus the price at which we can offer this book. The eBook edition has the same image colors as in the Deluxe Color Edition if your device can support color, or only black and white if that is all your device can display. Reflections at High Tide is a personal account of Archie Steele's life. From his start as a young child in Kings County, Nova Scotia, to his later life in California, this poignant memoir captures the life of an incredibly accomplished man. From the early teachings of his Nova Scotian shipbuilding heritage to his thriving medical practice in California we see how we can carry our history with us and embrace it. From the humor and follies of youth to the heartbreak and trials of adulthood we journey on a tale of life well lived. This is not only a memoir but an engaging introspective into a history that is slowly fading away. This inspiring book serves as an example of what we can do in life with dreams and perseverance. - Oralee O'Byrne, Executive Director, Age of Sail Museum, Diligent River, NS As a Scott's Bay resident, I was especially interested to read Dr. Archie Steele's chapters describing his youthful adventures here in Nova Scotia. Knowing of the people he spoke of helped bring his stories to life for me. My father often spoke of many of the same people, even though he was a generation later than Dr. Steele. Maybe it was from living here, but I was able to place him in those locations. Sometimes I knew exactly where he was in the community. I really enjoyed this glimpse into the past and recommend this book to anyone interested in stories about life in early twentieth-century Nova Scotia. - Jerry C. Huntley, coauthor of " The Historical Homes of Scott's Bay, Kings Co., Nova Scotia" Dr. Steele's autobiography is a wonderful addition to the rich history of southern California sailing. As a sailor and boat architect in his spare time, he designed and built the 40-ft sailboat Stella Maris in the backyard of his office on West Pico Boulevard. Three years later he built the Stella Maris II, which he raced in the Transpac in 1939 and again in 1941, winning that year's Barn Door trophy. His boat-building experiences and his thoughts on boat design are well worth the read. Archie Steele is a witty writer with fine, dry humor and a sailor's art of telling a good story. I thoroughly enjoyed this very readable Reflections at High Tide . - Ginger Clark, Past Historian, Los Angeles Yacht Club As a lifelong sailor, I much enjoyed Dr. Archie Steele's memoir Reflections at High Tide . Dr. Steele has penned a fine account of his love for the ocean and sailing, his design acumen, willingness to experiment, problem solving, his friends, and especially the history of Southern California yachting as well as crossing the Pacific in Transpacific Yacht Races to Honolulu.
