I wrote this book to commemorate the 50th (if my math is correct) anniversary of the 1973 publication of a wonderful book, Remembering The St. Louis World’s Fair, by Margaret Johanson Witherspoon. Back in early 2002, I decided I wanted to produce a “virtual tour” video of the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, covering every significant exhibit of the Fair. I chose Ms. Witherspoon’s book to get started on this project because, in her words, she wrote her “small volume” with the hope that it would whet the reader’s “appetite for further exploration into an age of never-to-be-forgotten St. Louis history.” All I can say is, it certainly did. It took more than two full years, but I eventually completed a four-hour, four-dvd boxed set, The 1904 World’s Fair Reconstructed: A Virtual Tour of the Entire Louisiana Purchase Exposition, which is still sold at the Missouri History Museum Gift Shop today. I also wrote this book because I thoroughly enjoying walking in the 2023 top- rated city park, according to USA Today. As I walk down the many wonderful paths and sidewalks of Forest Park, I often visualize many of the 200+ spectacular exhibits of the Fair as I pass by. I finally decided I wanted to share my experience with all of the other users of the Forest Park walking paths, and I wanted to do this in a format which mimicked Ms. Witherspoon’s very special book, even to the point of using the same 8-1/2 X 11 inch size book she did. In this book I start you out and finish you at what I consider to be the beginning point of the Forest Park walking paths, the Missouri History Museum. You can do this 4-mile walk in segments, if you wish. The overall path takes you from one end of the portions of the Fair included in Forest Park to the other end, basically from Skinker Blvd. and Washington University at the west end to the Boathouse at the east end, and from Lindell Blvd. and the Missouri History Museum at the north end to the 1904 World’s Fair Pavilion at the south end. Although this book is intentionally limited to 50 pages, so as to be easy to carry along the walking paths, those who are interested can also add a pdf copy of the book to their phone, as a potentially more technologically-advanced way of doing the tour. Just email me after purchasing the book and I can send you a pdf copy to install on your phone. As illustrated on the high resolution “Ground Plan of the Louisiana Purchase Exposition” I have included at the beginning of the book, many of the walking paths and sidewalks you will be on are in the same basic locations as they were during the Fair. The others were chosen not only for their proximity to the various major exhibits of the Fair, but for their sheer beauty and enjoyment. Finally, remember that, similar to Ms. Witherspoon’s goal in writing her book, the purpose of this “short volume” is not to provide a comprehensive guide to the Fair; for that you can watch my four-hour DVD set. Rather, the goal is merely to add to your enjoyment as you walk the many paths of the nation’s top-rated city park. Happy walking!

How are ratings calculated?
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzes reviews to verify trustworthiness.
