I have compiled and edited this collection of Restoration Comedy specifically for male and female actors to study as well as enjoy. The duologues in this book are mostly suited to more experienced and mature male and female actors, who have already acquired some of the technical skills necessary to perform the demands of this highly stylized writing. These scenes are suitable for a range of auditions, acting exams and awards as well as for exploration in a classroom setting. I have tried and tested these scenes with numerous students over the years with great success and more importantly, they have proved great fun to work on. The scenes have a synopsis of the play as well as a useful introduction for performing these scenes, setting the scenes in context. I have not provided guidelines as to how to perform these scenes. This is something for the individual performer to explore and what is what will make your performance individual. However, a focus on situation and character is essential as well as a truthfulness to the period of the writing. There are certain mannerisms and vocal skills needed to engage with this period of writing and this requires some depth of knowledge of the period and style in order to convey a truthful rendition of the period. Restoration Drama is unique to a particular period of theatrical history. Working on these scenes will enable you to build and enhance your knowledge of classic historical plays whilst also enabling you to develop your skills and experiences as an actor. The vocal skills and acting technique required to tackle the demands of this wonderful and unique style of writing are not easy. Methodical preparation will pay dividends when exploring these fascinating characters. I hope you enjoy exploring these scenes and more importantly, performing them!
