Anne Hale was looking forward to her friend’s cocktail party as an escape from the feelings of heavy foreboding she couldn’t shake. At the party she meets three others who share her premonitions of a coming disaster, which quickly come true. The Yellowstone supervolcano erupts, and as ash and volcanic gasses are carried around the planet, the sun vanishes. As growing fear, food shortages, and plague outbreaks compound an already fragile situation, Anne, Harry, Jason, and Deena fight to survive a dark, new world and wait for the Return of the Sun. Millions of American and foreign tourists visit Yellowstone National Park every year. They walk the boardwalks around the steaming geysers and bubbling mud pools, they marvel at the mineral falls where thousands of years of buildup have left a barren, moon-like landscape. Most are likely aware that volcanic activity underneath the Park is responsible for the unique thermal features, but awareness does not equal understanding. Geologists constantly monitor and study the hotspot and its surficial thermal activity while Global Positioning System satellites keep a wary eye on the active volcano. Current seismic data reveals the magma plume under Yellowstone as a bullet-shaped body measuring 45-miles wide by 410 miles deep. The current topography of the Park was formed when pressure from the magma, which is less dense than crustal rock, caused the volcano to violently erupt, leaving an empty chamber which then collapsed upon itself. Known as the Yellowstone Caldera, the old crater forms some of the most beautiful landscape in the world. It is also a portentous reminder of the incredible danger lurking beneath the surface.
