He was the founding Director of Roman Provincial Coinage Online and, with Professor Andrew Wilson, of Coin Hoards of the Roman Empire, and continues to co-direct both projects. He is also an editor of the series Roman Imperial Coinage and Roman Provincial Coinage. He is the author of the standard work on countermarks on provincial coinage (Greek Imperial Countermarks, 1985) and of Ancient History from Coins (1995), currently available in six languages, and edited Coinage and Identity in the Roman Provinces (2005). He has written widely on Roman coinage and history.
