How do you catch a thief who isn’t there? Ruby discovers the perils of throwing caution to the wind as she embarks on her fourth adventure. Ruby Redfort has a lot of reasons to feel confident. Undercover agent, code cracker, thirteen-year-old genius — she’s one fearless kid, buster. Unmasking an evil villain? Done. Honing her parkour skills by climbing skyscrapers and leaping across roofs? All in a day’s work. Heeding the warning signs? Well, not so much. When a ghostly foe begins stealing from the highest buildings in Twinford, Ruby Redfort is ready to defy death one more time to capture the bandit. But fearlessness can lead to taking risks, which can land a person in very serious trouble. While Ruby may think she’s invincible, there’s truth to the saying that recklessness always comes before a fall. Gr 5–8—Barely recovered from her previous adventure, thirteen year old super sleuth Ruby Redfort jumps back into action when an invisible thief commits a scandalous crime at the annual costume exhibit gala in Twinford. She uses her trusty code cracking skills as well as a new found love of parkour to try to catch the kidnapper/thief. Feel the Fear picks up after Catch Your Death with some of the loose ends immediately tied up. New readers may find the first chapters confusing as background information is not initially given and the pacing of the story is, at times, leisurely. Yet, those who enjoy both Nancy Drew and James Bond as well as fans of the previous books will appreciate Redfort's latest mystery. Noted mathematician Marcus du Sautoy provides the puzzles and codes Ruby cracks in the novel making this a choice for older STEM collections and teaching units. Backmatter includes a brief introduction to basic parkour moves as well as a further explanation to a noted scientific test that factors into the story. Fans will happily greet the usual cast of marvelous supporting characters and rejoice at Ruby’s return. —Booklist Online Ruby Redfort is a 13-year-old undercover agent, genius code-cracker, and brilliant detective who works for Spectrum, a secret crime-busting organization...Actual puzzles and codes created by a noted mathematician make this novel a good choice for older STEM collections and teaching units. Notes on Braille, Parkour, and the ability to move around one’s environment without limitations are an added touch and help create a story of great interest for boys and girls! —School Library Connection Lauren Child is the best-selling author-illustrator of a series of picture books about Charlie and Lola as well as the award-winning chapter-book series about the irrepressible Clarice Bean, in which the character Ruby Redfort was introduced.
