Ruby Miller, a 50 year-old independent trucker who lives on the freeway, is always seeking to pick up that next load, take it to wherever it's headed and collect the pay. She is interested in tracking down her mother with whom she hasn't spoken in years as she knows the day it will become too late is coming. When she is asked by one of her freight contacts to take a load of building materials and Christmas decorations to a New Mexico town for Operation Christmas, an organization that provides Christmas-related charity to needy families, she refuses because the pay is up in the air. She decides to take it when she learns her mother might be in New Mexico and while it's a big place, she might have some time to search while there. During her journey, she ends up forming a surprise relationship with Chance, a hitchhiker who turns out to be the carpenter sent by Operation Christmas to help the residents of Adobe Springs, New Mexico to rebuild their homes after a devastating forest fire the summer prior. She also meets Georgie Hernandez, the owner of the Adobe Springs Inn, where several of the town's core families are residing while they rebuild their town from the ashes. Steeped in rich Mexican/New Mexican culture, the town is unique and a place all its own, and despite the lack of anything Christmas surrounding them, they have found the spirit anyway. Ruby quickly endears herself with the townspeople, but is itchy to leave -- until her truck breaks down, stranding her there for a week while the part comes in. If it hadn't, she never would have run into her mom...
