Saint Joseph of Cupertino is considered by many to be the patron saint of aviators, because he is the saint of flights (in ecstasy) par excellence. His ecstatic flights were so frequent and so spectacular that they left young and old, men and women of all social classes in awe. People came from all over to attend his mass, not only out of curiosity, but also to see a saint in person, who performed miracles everywhere. His devotion to Mary was so great that, just hearing her name, he became ecstatic. His love for the Blessed Sacrament was equally great and he spent many hours in prayer before the tabernacle. Almost every day, when celebrating mass, he had moments of ecstasy and, at times, he rose from the ground. However, not everything was wonderful in his life. He had much to suffer from some, even ecclesiastics, who considered that everything was appearance and falsehood. He was denounced to the Inquisition and tried, but was acquitted. However, to avoid the excesses of the people, who sought relics at all costs and visited him constantly, they tried to hide him in the convent of Pietrarubbia, then in Frossombrone and finally in Osimo, where he died. Some consider him the patron saint of students. Reading his life is a breath of fresh air for our spiritual life. He was so humble that he called himself a friar ass, but God performed extraordinary miracles through his intercession, both in life and after his death. Let us ask him to strengthen our faith to love God with all our heart.
