This anthology of poetry is based on the natural beauty of Sarah P. Duke Gardens at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. It is the culmination of a nine-week lesson emphasizing the importance of memorizing classical poetry. During the lesson, I discovered that many of my students lacked the necessary background knowledge to properly connect with the assignment. This became painfully evident when discussing Robert Frost’s, “The Road Not Taken.” The idea of choosing a literal path to travel seemed to be a foreign concept, let alone a metaphorical choice. Consequently, a field trip to Duke Gardens resulted in the heartfelt poetry contained within these pages.
