SHADOWS IN THE SPOTLIGHT is a non-fiction book about the Tulsa Spotlight theater—a Tulsa landmark, architectural treasure, and home of the longest consecutively running play in American theater history. “The Drunkard” by Richard Mansfield Dickinson, a nineteenth century temperance melodrama with audience participation is performed every Saturday evening. Its 70th anniversary will be in 2023. The show also includes the “Olio”, a variety of acts by musicians, singers, dancers, comedians, magicians and novelty acts. And on Friday evenings, Saturday and Sunday afternoons, the Spotlight Children’s Theater presents up to six shows yearly with 20-30 actors in each play. The theater building, designed by the famous Bruce Goff, is on the National Register of Historic Places. The house was designed for the well-known piano teacher Patti Adams Shriner in 1928. It features art by sculptor Alfonso Ianelli and muralist Olinka Hrdy. Thousands of actors and performers have been on its stage over the years. And thousands have attended performances. This is the ONLY book ever written about the Tulsa Spotlight Theater.
