Jackson Bennett, a veteran cop, is dismissed from the Chicago Police Department after shooting his partner to stop the torture of a young suspect. A pariah to police departments across the country, Bennett secures a position with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources in the majestic Lake Superior region of Minnesota. Despite having no experience with the outdoors or wildlife, Bennett eventually settles in but soon finds his uneasy existence disrupted by the discovery of several unexplained mutilated animal carcasses. Tasked with locating a bear presumed awakened from hibernation, but unequipped to handle the assignment on his own, Bennett enlists the help of Lexy, a young but experienced fellow conservation officer, Dr. Farley, a brilliant biology professor, and a trio of professional trackers lead by the strong-willed and confident Charlie. The group sets out in search of the elusive animal but as they venture into Superior National Forest they soon realize their quarry is no bear but a highly intelligent super-predator. The hunters suddenly find themselves the hunted as what begins as a run of the mill wildlife management expedition becomes an interspecies battle for supremacy in a frigid and hostile environment.
