"Searching for Sansai" is a book for anyone who is interested in local wild plants, foraging in general or Japanese Canadian cooking, especially those residing in British Columbia or the Pacific Northwest. The book includes: 1. identification of species of interest 2. potential and actual locations to find these plants 3. examples of Japanese recipes for each plant 4. the historical and cultural importance of these "sansai" (wild mountain plants) 4. conversations about the past and future of foraging and the environment In passing on this information, the author hopes to attract more people and newer generations to the culture and history of foraging locally, particularly those of Japanese descent. Sharon is a third generation Canadian of Japanese descent who was inspired to write this book to combine her interests in education and plants in a book project. She has a postgraduate degree in agricultural sciences and is an avid gardener who has always been interested in discovering new and exciting crops for an area. Sharon resides in the Vancouver, B.C. area with her husband and extended family.
