“I suppose that what I am about to do is almost criminal. In the eyes of the world, my act tonight brands me as a felon. Well, what does it matter? I am sick of dallying about London, of going off on meaningless big-game shooting expeditions. I have always hungered to see life, to meet things face to face. My opportunity has come at last, and I will not turn away from it!” —The Hon. John Lawless, The Boundary Raiders , 1914 Fearless. Reckless. Indomitable. Meet the Gentleman Adventurer who started off at odds with Sexton Blake only to become one of his greatest allies. The Honourable John Lawless is a force of nature. The son of a legendary arctic explorer, he has adventure in his blood and little patience for red tape. He operates on the margins of the law—but always for the good of the Empire. Accompanied by his batman and staunch companion Sam—a proud Maasai warrior—Lawless is a modern-day “Robin Hood,” fighting lost causes and righting wrongs that few would dare touch. He is exactly the kind of daredevil adventurer Sexton Blake is often hired to catch. But when the detective tracks down this daring aristocrat, instead of an enemy he finds a friend and ally who will work alongside him for years to come. Collected here for the first time are the five tales from 1914 that forged their legendary friendship. In The Boundary Raiders , Lawless makes his name by attempting to solve an international dispute singlehandedly—with high explosives. A Bid for a Battleship finds him embroiled in a high-stakes conflict between two South American nations, while Arms for Ulster sees Lawless and Sam on a mission to intercept gun-runners that spirals into a deadly trap. In The Bogus Prince , a case of mistaken identity throws Lawless and Blake into political intrigue within a tiny European kingdom. Finally, in The Mystery of Shamrock IV , the two team up to help protect Sir Thomas Lipton’s America’s Cup contender from sabotage. This is the first of several anthologies collecting the great adventures of Lawless and Blake. Each edition includes all the original illustrations to bring these classic tales to life. Reviews "Truly Andrew Murray was a very gifted writer of detective-cum-adventure tales with Sexton Blake and Lawless working together for the good of all. I feel this part of his work for the Blake Saga has been largely overshadowed by his possibly more well-known crooks Kew and Carlac. For myself I prefer the tales of an “English Gentleman”." ~ Josie Packman, The Third Murray and the Honourable John Lawless , Collectors’ Digest Christmas Annual , 1976.
