For the most part, I thought, I had been blessed to have been spared shame. In fact, until I began the research for this book, I was unaware of any way that shame had influenced my own life. In retrospect, I realize that I must have been shamed at various points in my life.   As a simple example, I recall always making it a point to sit as close to the middle of the classroom as I could to avoid notice.
