USC freshman Blair West’s excitement over attending the university of her choice turns to dread when a computer glitch throws her out the dorms and into the nearby home of black matriarch, Rita Hill and her daughter, Sharika. This environment includes chores, a curfew, and culture shock. In her first three days in South Los Angeles, she is mugged, blows a tryout for the tennis team, and threatened with a beat down. “You know, Blair? We’re like cousins now, but let me tell you something… if you do a second take and look at my husband longer than five seconds, I’m gonna think something’s up. You feelin me?” “Yes, I’m feelin you.” Thus begins her transition from a farm in Blythe, CA and her first year of college in which she suffers from bad grades, bouts of poor judgment, constant pressure from Sharika, and lack of parental support since she chose a ‘fancy and expensive’ college. A few new people in her life try to help her avert the burden of failure. Past issues of some characters help tell this story by showing how everyone involved has something to prove, and with the exception of Rita, they also have something to learn. With over 20 titles to his name David doc Robertson decided to challenge his imagination to characterize a young college coed taking the leap from her small town farm to the university of her choice in Los Angeles. Robertson’s best works have come from the genre of family and the good ol’ days of his youth. Past challenges, however, have led to successful offerings in the mystery, paranormal, and romance genres, outside of his non-fiction work. The story originated many years ago when the author and his daughter picked up her tennis partner, a block away from USC. They drove by a home and spotted an elderly black woman, sitting in her rocker on the front porch of a large two-story home. A young blond, white coed came outside, and they had the following exchange: "I'm leaving, Grandma, and I won't be gone long." "Okay, be back in time for dinner." "Yes Mam, I will." Then she left and headed to USC with her backpack. Though he did not totally dismiss a possible blood connection between the two, their relationship taunted Robertson's imagination until he finally wrote She Got Some Kind of Wonderful Game.
