Shine Bright is a heartfelt picture book based on the true story of my firstborn son. Today, he has grown so tall that I sometimes have to look up just to see his face. But when he was young, his life was a world of exploration. Every day was a journey—learning how to live fully, honestly, and as himself. At times, that journey felt overwhelming. Yet looking back now, those days shine brightly in my memory, full of wonder and curiosity—much like the child in this story. At first, I thought, “Boys are just like that.” Over time, however, I came to understand something deeper. It was not because he was a boy. It was because he was himself. Those moments became some of the most beautiful parts of my life. They became a jewel-like story, gifted to me through the name Balgo Bitnara , which means “Shine Bright.” Whether raising a son or a daughter, I believe every child is a precious jewel, carrying a unique light. I hope that, like the child in this book, children grow up learning to live as their true selves. And I hope they are surrounded by families who support them with patience, love, and understanding. When children are loved and understood, they learn not only how to shine, but how to shine in their own way. Shine Bright is a picture book for children ages 4 to 8. It is written for young children, but it is also a book for parents, grandparents, and families. When families read this story together, it opens gentle conversations about love, safety, and growing up. It helps children feel understood, and it reminds adults how deeply children experience the world. Shine Bright shows that shining does not mean being loud or perfect. Sometimes, shining means being held, being loved, and feeling safe with the people around you. This is a story that families can share, talk about, and return to again and again. - About the Author - Soohee Chae holds a master’s degree in Early Childhood Education and has devoted her life to working with young children across diverse cultural settings. She is the mother of four grown children who now live across the United States. She currently lives in sunny Miami with her husband, her cat Romi, garden trees, visiting birds, and tropical fish. She believes stories can help children grow into kind and thoughtful people who love books, nature, themselves, and their neighbors.
