SIMPLICITY is not as simple as it sounds. Simplicity, in fact, is neither simple nor easy. It is not about renouncing material possessions, taking a vow of poverty, emptying our minds of all concerns, or ditching our to-do lists. It is a deliberate choice to focus on what is truly important. It is a daily exercise of breathing in and breathing out, deliberately taking one step and then another. Seeking after simplicity winnows out the unneeded and leads us to what matters most. And what matters most is our soul’s connection to Jesus Christ. As we discipline ourselves to strip away the clutter that clings to us, obscuring our true selves, tugging and turning us from the journey, as we strive to sublimate every aspect of our lives to our true Master, then true simplicity will slowly, wondrously, emerge. Here’s a promise that will not fail you. Jesus is all you need. Sounds trite, you say? Speak it out loud: “Jesus is all I need.” This is an essential truth not to be missed. We are primarily spiritual beings, created for eternity, and we aren’t taking anything material with us. No physical item can make you more worthy, more loved, or more important than you are at this moment as a redeemed child of the King of heaven. EVELYN PRUITT SHOWERS is a graduate of Wake Forest University and the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. She resides in Leesburg, Virginia, with her husband, Rob Showers, an attorney specializing in church and nonprofit law. They have three daughters, three sons-in-law, and three grandchildren. Whether writing, sewing, painting, gardening, or enjoying her grandchildren, Evvie stays busy. Since retiring from the family law firm and from teaching piano lessons, she lives in a multi-generational household with her middle daughter, son-in-law, and their family. Her life’s goal is to use everything God gave her to spread His love far and wide.
