Titus Salt was a leading manufacturer, politician and philanthropist in Victorian Bradford, England. He is best known for having built Salt's Mill, one of the largest textile mills in the world at that time, together with the industrial village of Saltaire, providing modern, clean living conditions for his workforce. Several modern books (and booklets) have been written on Salt, “the great paternalist”. However many of these publications are either too hagiographical or too “bitty” missing out important aspects of Salt’s influential life. This booklet briefly tries to remedy such defects. In particular, in contrast to other assessments of Salt, it considers Salt’s religion and personal faith, the most significant factor in shaping his life, especially in providing the main impetus for his business and philanthropic activities. Salt and Saltaire are set in context ie Salt was exceptional but not unique. There were other industrial model villages in the Bradford area such as the little known Ripleyville in Bolling. The booklet also considers (and corrects) some of the myths surrounding Salt such as his alleged teetotalism (Salt kept a cellar of wine and liked his daily “tipple”). The author presents an objective and judicious analysis of Salt (warts and all). Highly illustrated and written in a readable popular style, the bookletnwould be an ideal companion to anyone visiting Saltaire and its Mills, or to the general reader wanting a brief, but informative introduction to Sir Titus Salt, his life and achievements.

How are ratings calculated?
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzes reviews to verify trustworthiness.
