The striped hyena is native to arid regions of northern and central Africa as well as portions of southeast Asia. This species is solitary and rarely congregates except in small family groups or during breeding. Striped hyenas are primarily carnivorous, feeding on scavenged carrion and small vertebrates, but will occasionally supplement their diet with fruit.
