In the NBA, for example, the game has become guard-oriented after decades of being a league for the big men. This is due in large part to the fact that basketball is becoming a more open, fast-paced, and skills-based game that bigger players like power forwards and centers can no longer easily dominate at will. Of course, it has almost always been the case that the WNBA will follow the evolution of the game in general. Like the NBA, the earlier part of the WNBA was focused too much on the power forwards or centers. Simply put, the bigger players were almost always the ones who were going to dominate the floor in the WNBA because the smaller players needed to catch up first. This was the case in the NBA when the giants were the most important players on every team. The likes of Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain during the 1960s were the most dominant players. Even in the 1990s and early 2000s, most of the best players in the league were power forwards and centers. The same could be said about the WNBA. Throughout the comparatively short history of the WNBA, only Cynthia Cooper and Diana Taurasi have won the MVP Award as true guards. All of the other dominant players in the history of the league were either forwards or centers. Did you enjoy this excerpt?
