He graduated from Sayville High School on Long Island, New York in 1961. He enlisted in the United States Navy but was granted an Honorable Discharge shortly thereafter because of an asthmatic condition. He earned a diploma from a one-year program at Adelphi School of Business in Brooklyn, New York in 1962. He then entered into an apprentice program at Buys Brothers Printing Company in Islip, New York, a hot-type letterpress job printer. In 1967 he moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan where he studied at Reformed Bible College for a year before transferring to Calvin College. He received his BA degree from Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1972 and he earned his MA degree from Michigan State University in 1977. He taught for 11 years at West Elementary in Grandville, Michigan and retired from Grandville Printing Company in 2000.
