Sometimes I Like the Quiet: Duke the Deaf Dog ASL Series #4 by Kelly Brakenhoff is an exceptionally astute children's picture book about a deaf dog named Duke who struggles at times, wanting to enjoy the quiet and get away from the difficulty of trying to keep up with the ongoing conversations around him. Brakenhoff allows readers to experience how demanding it is for those who are hearing impaired and to step into their shoes for just the briefest of moments. Kelly Brakenhoff's Sometimes I Like the Quiet showed me how frustrating it must be not only to keep up with what's been said but also to filter out what isn't necessary. Her book is an incredible educational tool that so many people will be able to learn from. The illustrations by Caterina Baldi are unique and comical in a sweet way that children will be drawn to. It's an interesting world where dogs live like humans, although most of the dogs are without clothes, apart from the mother dog who wears a dress. Their expressions are realistic, and you truly feel for Duke. This book should be a mainstay in all preschool, kindergarten, and elementary schools so that students and educators of all kinds can be better equipped to understand the needs of everyone in their classroom. ~ Reviewed by Erin Nicole Cochran for Readers' Favorite
