A tramp is a long-term homeless person who travels from place to place as a vagrant, traditionally walking from place to place. There are several types from a young person fleeing abusive families to people making a living as a wandering beggar or prostitute. Wanderers have existed since ancient times. The rock band Supertramp got its name from the book The Autobiography of a Supertramp by William Henry written in 1908. The band started in 1969 with the patronage of a Dutch milionaire who told mucician Rich Davies he would invest in the band then named "The Joint." Roger Hodgson joined as a song writer after over 100 muscians had been interviewed. The first two ablums sole 150,000 each, and in 1972, the millionaire supporter withdrew his patronage. The band had to decide if it was time to throw in the towel, or if they were going to keep on keeping on. With their third album, they had two hits and Cirmes of the Century became number 1 in England and the rest is history. Supertramp has eight hits in the Top Forty with "The Logical Song," "Take the Long Way Home," "It's Raining Again,", "Dreamer," "Give a Little Bit," and "Goodbye Stranger." The band hit its zenith in 1979-80 with Breakfast in America, becoming the soundtrack for a generation selling over 20 million copies. Unfortunately, with money coming in, tensions grew between Davies and Hodgson and Hodgson left the band after their 1981 album, Famous Last Words. Supertramp has three Grammy nominations and won a Grammy in 1980 for the "Best Engineered Album" of the Year. They have two certified Diamond Records and have sold over 60 million records. Lady Diana of Wales in 1981 said, "Supertramp is my favorite band!" A fan said, "Seeing Supertramp without Roger Hodges is like seeing the Rolling Stones without Jagger or U2 without Bono. This band is sadly not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as of 2025, but should be.
