Joan Marie Larkin was born in 1958. By playing pure and simple rock and roll without making an issue of her gender, Joan Jett has become the figurehead for several generations of female rockers. She likes he music loud with overpowering hooks with Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath as her musical inspirations. She is ranked the 87th best guitarist by Rolling Stone Magazine and the only other woman on the list is Joni Mitchell. By age 15, she was part of The Runaways (1976-1978) whose debut song was "Cherry Bomb." They created three albums and broke up in 1978. Joan began her solo career and after being rejected by 20 record labels for being a female rocker, she teamed up with producer Kenny Laguna to form Blackheart Records. After playing gigs, her albums were sold from the trunk of a car. She became one of the few females to cross over from punk to rock music. Her commerical success came from the albums she and the Blackhearts put out through the 1980's, but continued to make albums and tour through the early 2020's. In 2010, the movie The Runaways was made with Kristen Stewart playing Joan Jett. Joan Jett is also known for being a vegetarian and an activist for P.E.T.A. She has also appeared in many television programs and cameos in movies over the decades. Joan Jett and the Blackhearts were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015. Some of her hits include "I Love Rock and Roll," "Bad Reputation," "Crimson and Clover," "I Hate Myself for Loving You," "Fake Friends," and "Good Music."
