Devo is an American new wave band from Akron Ohion who took its name from the philosophy called de-evolution; meaning the human race is degressing and not improving. It was formed in 1972 by Mark Mothersbaugh and Jerry Casale. Devo adopted a man-machine personsona, complete with flower pot headgear, matching industrial jumpsuits, robotic movements and a heavy mechanical sound to convey the dehumanizing aspects of modern technology. Often videos played behind them as they performed in concert. Before the group formed, Gerald Casele, Mark Mothersbaugh and Bob Lewis were art students at Kent State and present on May 4th when the National Guard fired M1 rifles into a group of anti-Vietnam War student protesters killing four and injuring nine. Jeffrey Miller, a friend of theirs was killed that day. Students were protesting President Nixon sending troops into Cambodia wihout getting Congressional approval. The band's first success was the single "Jocko Homo" (1977) and they released their first album, We Are Not Men, We are Devo ! in 1978. The album was produced by Brian Eno and included the song "Can't Get No Satisfaction" on it, a song that Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones said is the best cover he has ever heard. In 1980, "Whip It" reached number 14 on the charts. Devo ceate nine albums from 1978-2010. The first three albums were best selling albums. Some of their other hits include "We're All Devo," "Mexican Radio" and "Uncontrollable Urge." They were nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018, 2021 and 2022. Devo has three Top 100 hits and the documentary "Devo" was premiered at the Sundance Festival in 2024.
