There are both famous and infamous figures who, according to local legend, once lived in or passed through this area. One of the most notorious was Al Capone, the infamous Chicago crime boss also known as “Scarface.” Capone reportedly spent time at the historic Myles Building in downtown Melbourne. This two story structure, built in 1913, originally housed a restaurant and a pool hall on the first floor. The second floor served as the Midway Hotel. Shortly after the building was constructed, the Melbourne Times newspaper relocated its offices there. After the end of Prohibition in the United States, the former pool hall became home to Shorty’s Bar. Legend has it that Capone stayed at the Midway Hotel because of its location. The hotel was named Midway because Melbourne sits roughly halfway between Jacksonville and Miami. Capone owned a mansion in Miami and often traveled throughout Florida while conducting what he called his “business.” So when people talk about famous or infamous faces connected with this community, the name Al Capone certainly comes to mind.
